Product Swaps For Healthier Hormones

#Hormonehealth is trending on Tiktok. It’s hard to fathom, but this hashtag has almost 705 million views – finally, we’re paying attention to hormone imbalances, cycle struggles and reproductive conditions.

But it’s a double edged sword. Big brands have clued in to the fact that “clean” products sell. And greenwashing (marketing tactics used to make products look healthy, natural, organic or environmentally friendly) can be really hard to spot.

Even though endocrine disrupting chemicals are lurking within many of our household and beauty products, it’s not always clear what swaps will make a difference, and which ones only look clean.

Not to worry – that’s why you have us! We’ll provide some helpful tips and guide you towards the best products so you can feel confident in what you’re using.

Our Take on Product Swaps

It’s easy to fall down the TikTok rabbit hole, to fall prey to the fear mongering, and believe that you have to repurchase every possible product.

We’re realists.

Of course, it’s important to use good quality items that aren’t exacerbating existing hormonal imbalances. But it’s not healthy to stress over every product you use. We live in the modern world – some toxins and chemicals are inevitable. Our job is to try our best not to exacerbate this harm.

So, our rule of thumb is once you finish a product, swap it out for a better alternative.

We know this can be tricky – lots of “clean” alternatives are less effective, more expensive, or don’t last as long, making it hard to switch. This is why we’ve done the heavy lifting for you. In this article and in our Marketplace, you’ll find tried-and-true alternatives you can trust.

Let’s check out some of our favourites!

#1 Toothpaste

Toothpastes are loaded with chemicals, foaming agents, colourants and fluoride. When choosing a healthier swap, look out for the ingredient hydroxyapatite. This is a healthier fluoride alternative that helps to protect tooth enamel.

Our favourite alternatives that give you a fresh and clean mouth-feel are Green Beaver and Boka

#2 Make-up

This probably doesn’t come as a shock. Unfortunately, preservatives, colourants, parabens, fragrances and many other hormone-disrupting ingredients are found in the makeup products that line most stores.

But when it comes to make-up, you want something that’s good quality and high performing. Look no further! We love ILIA for their Limitless Lash Mascara, SPF skin tint, lipstick and lip tint. Also try Kosas SPF foundation, concealer, and setting powder as well as Elate Cosmetics’ blush and bronzer and eyeshadow palettes.

#3 Skincare

Like makeup, most skincare you see at drugstores or big name beauty stores have a ton of additives and toxic agents we want to avoid. Here are some brands we know, love and trust to switch up your skincare routine:

#4 Body Wash and Lotion

Swap your standard body washes and lotions for ones that don’t have synthetic colours, fragrances and foaming agents that can disrupt hormones and strip your body of its natural oils.

Next time, try Everyone for Everybody lotion and body wash (we love the citrus & mint scent!).

#5 Shampoo & Conditioner

Some harmful ingredients – like sulfates, parabens, fragrance, silicones and phthalates – lurk in our haircare products.

Next time you go to buy shampoo, try out Carina Organics or Innersense Organics instead!

What About My Current Faves?

To gut-check your go-tos, scroll through the Environmental Working Group’s SkinDeep Database. Here you can search your most used products, see their overall quality rating and understand which ingredients to stay away from.

Swapping your products can be daunting, so we’ve curated some of our favourites here and in our marketplace. Looking and feeling good’s never been so easy!
